Exhibitions Retrospective by James Muriuki

 

 


19 November-9 December 2010. This retrospective pays homage to one of Kenya's most famous artists, James Muriuki, who uses mainly photography as mean of expression. On display are some of his latest art projects as well of some designerphotographs, which have been part of important exhibitions around the world such as Snap Judgments, Space: Currencies in Contemporary African Art at Museum Africa in Johannesburg, and Events of the Self at the new Walther Collection Museum in Germany. Since 2006 Muriuki's shots have been on display at the International Centre for Photography in New York but most of them have never been shown in Kenya. Auditorium Goethe-Institut Nairobi. ames Muriuki is internationally the best known Kenyan artist, using photography as his base medium. In 2006 James Muriuki was chosen for Snap Judgments, Okui Enwezor;s show on African photography at the International Centre for Photography/New York. And yet, most of his work has not been shown in Kenya.

This is his first solo exhibition, a show that is long overdue. For this occasion, curator Miriam Syowia Kyambi has put together a retrospective of Muriuki;s work in the past years, showing the variety of his art projects and the development of his use of photography. Retrospective includes Muriuki;s latest works as well as photographs that have been included in important exhibitions around the world such as Snap Judgments, Space: Currencies in Contemporary African Art at Museum Africa, Johannesburg, and Events of the Self at the new Walther Collection Museum in Germany.
